Nordic Card Tutorial

Hi All…

Seems a bit crazy doing Christmas in July in the middle of a heatwave but I must admit I definitely have the Christmas Bug!

I’m going to show you one of my favourite embossing folders that I used on the Christmas Workshop late last year!

Becki

How to Make the Card –

BLOG

1. Cut the coloured card (Kraft-core core’dinations No:14) to the size of your standard size card. (mine is 13.5cm x 13.5cm) and emboss the cardstock with the Tim Holtz Holiday Knit Embossing Folder.

BLOG2

2. Here comes the messy part… Use a little White Gesso and I cannot emphasize this enough (Make sure there is next to nothing on your roller) keep rolling on mat until it is really thin layer. As you can always add more but you cannot take it away when there is a thick splodge on your work.

BLOG3

3. See what I mean! Roll thinly over your cardstock I know it looks faint now but trust me once you have the hang of it… just keep going over and over and it will soon get to the effect you desire. The Gesso automatically goes on the raised surface of the embossed card as the rest is dipped down slightly.

BLOG4

4. I am still in love with this technique! Granted it may not be for everyone (as it can be a little messy) but Tim has got a Holiday Knit stencil which will give a similar technique just not raised unless you use texture paste through the stencil or heavy body acrylic paint. Put background to one side to dry (gesso does dry very quickly)

BLOG5

5. Stamp Peter the Polar Bear onto white cardstock. I’m using Copics for this project so it is copic friendly card and Memento inkpad for all alcohol based markers (Promarkers, copics etc) If you want to use water based pens or watercolour please use a Versafine inkpad instead.

BLOG6

6. I’ve die cut the cardstock using a Spellbinders square die (9cm x 9cm approx).

BLOG7

7. Ok I don’t usually show how I colour things as I think everyone has their own way of doing it. But I do sometimes get asked what colours I use so I’m showing you for this one. I used B00 for the Sky.

BLOG8

8. I’ve realised a lot of us find big areas of white scary! I love colouring but white has always scared me… a Polar Bears white! why do anything right?! Or what can I do other than add glitter?! I really Love Warm Grey tones. You can use light blues or cool greys also but you will get a colder effect to your image. I started with W0 hopefully you can see where I have coloured.

Start with a larger area for the lightest colour we will gradually darken down to a smaller area.

Ok I’m going to fast forward a bit with just images so you can see what I’m doing…

using W1-W7 add your shadowing gradually making the area smaller and smaller the darker the pen you use.

onto the reds…

BLOG14

9. I Coloured the whole hat with R27

BLOG15

10. Then went in with R29 along the edges and in to the R27 just to shadow the outside and give the hat some dimension.

BLOG16

11. Finishing off with R59 using a little of this just as extra depth to the lines in the hat and some edges.

BLOG17

12. I have used YG95 Pale Olive for the Holly. by all means use prettier greens if you wish.

BLOG18

13. Finally going back to W0 & W1 for a little shadowing to the bobble at the top of his hat.

BLOG19

14. In the original card I did I stamped using a grey inkpad (so I cold see where I needed to apply ink) and then covered with Copic Opaque white ink as I didn’t have a white Stazon…can you believe it!!! I do now and this makes life so much easier it is a slightly softer look. So use whichever one you prefer.

(please do NOT use a stazon cleaner on your clear stamps) wash with water or a wipe. I have noticed the more ink on your stamps the easier it is to get your nails on it through the wipe and remove.

BLOG20

15. There are two large pieces of snow in the set for his nose if you wish to use them.

BLOG21

16. Add a little Crystal stickles to the snow beneath the polar bear and also snow on his hat.

BLOG22

17. Mount card on a darker colour I’ve used brown as I didn’t have a dark blue. Attach to Nordic Background and to folded card. Finally add a little white to the eye and nose for a highlight if required using a white pen. Add greeting if you desire.

18. One warm festive Polar Bear!

Here’s a few of the samples from last year…

If you use Kraft Core core’dinations sanding the raised embossed image gives a gorgeous rustic effect too.

Happy Stamping
